In 2007, during the filming of Werner Herzog’s documentary Encounters at the End of the World, cameras captured one of the most haunting and inexplicable images ever recorded in Antarctica.
A single Adélie penguin suddenly breaks from its colony. While hundreds of others march in orderly lines toward the open ocean to feed, this one turns its back on the water.
It begins walking inland—straight toward the distant, jagged mountains, across nearly 70 kilometers of nothing but endless, featureless ice and snow.
Only death.
The scientists on site tried to intervene. They gently picked the bird up and turned it around, pointing it back toward the sea.
Each time, the penguin immediately corrected course and resumed walking inland—resolute, unstoppable, almost serene.
